Backgammon NJ HD App Reviews

Best there is.

Absolutely the best backgammon program outside of Snowie, hands down.

Developers did not make this fair

First off, its amazing how many times the computer gets exactly what it needs in the dice roll to beat me. I am a pretty good player but you cant tell that from my ranking or game play against the computer. The way they set up pre rolls is dumb. Why they didnt just program the rolls to be random Ill never know. Im irritated I paid money for this with my only pay back being this review. I urge you not to pay for this app unless the developers will offer your money back if the computer wins by luck. However I dont think its luck at all. They get the roll they need exactly when they need it. I played the hardest level and won maybe 40% of the time. I seem to win less on the middle level. DO NOT BUY THIS APP. YOU WILL ONLY GET FRUSTRATED.

MM

Have no fear of this computer program. Set it at Expert level. Then before start playing go to setting, scroll to the bottom and change Swap Opening Rolls, play your first game, regardless of what happens in the first game or subsequent games, when you are ready to start your next game, change setting on Swap Opening Rolls again. Keep changing this setting before starting your next game for as long as you like. You will see an incredible change in the luck of the computer. But I have to tell you that the computer still plays a powerful game even when the dice is not in its favor. I think this is a fun exercise, which indicates that the dice file has been arranged in computers favor as the expertise level increases. The designers of this game are very clever. On the surface it appears that the dice is being manipulated. But overall if I play in the manual dice mode, I see a more cautious program making its moves. Hard to tell how exactly this program appears to have a better chance of winning in the automated dice rolls.

Most annoying game

I delete the game, its the most annoying game ever. I usually play in expert mode, when I put the game on expert mode cheating makes me crazy,I cant play this game any more, and I dont recommend it to anyone

Very fun, but...

This is a great game, very fun but, it is frustrating on expert level. Cant be sure of fixed rolls but it certainly seems that if the cpu is in trouble it gets the exact rolls needed. Or, if you ignore a hint, seems punitive. I still play it a lot.

Great App

Great backgammon app. I especially like the nackgammon & play it all the time. I play against the computer. I would note that lately, the computer moves seem to have become somewhat predictable (update?)

Pathetic

Critical reviews seem to mysteriously disappear, as pathetic as the app

Best gammon app

Best backgammon app out there, for sure. Excellent self analysis tools that I find extremely helpful. Yes, at times the computer rolls seem unfair. However, I am more focused on improving my game which this app has in spades. The best part of it is the real time play against others. There are tons of excellent players out there on the app.

Good app

I use this app a lot no problems

Great game

Ive really learned strategy from this great game. Challenges me to be a better player!

Horribly Corrupt

Worst "algorithm" ever. Youll get truly random dice maybe half the time. 56 years rolling dice, ask me how I know. The other half of your matches will be obviously skewed in favor of your opponent, especially if youre a good player.

A great teaching tool?

No, it is not. It teaches a new player that the only way to have any chance at winning is to never, ever leave a tile open, because the AI will hit it and it takes forever to bring it back off the bar and into play. Statistics cannot prove that the dice are rigged, but an analysis can show how improbable certain events are. The computer gives itself the opening move far too often, and game-saving rolls so often as to be laughable... whereas the meat player experiences the opposite. Need a 4 or a 6 to bring a tile in? The computer will get in on the first roll but meat player will be there a while. The improbability of not being able to get in when the AI has only three points blocked, yet it takes the meat player 4 or 5 rolls to get in, is laughably obvious. Only one slot open? Exact same thing. Somehow the computer always gets exactly what it needs. The computer also pads the number of doubles the meat player gets by giving him an improbable number of doubles when bearing off at the end, but when meat only has one or two tiles left and doubles gives no benefit. The numerous ways this program rigs the dice are obvious, and here in the reviews it is obvious that a lot of us see it. A very basic analysis on a 200 game sample shows a huge bias in favor of the "AI" where bringing a tile into play is concerned. The computer is given optimal rolls far too often to be random. After noticing that the computer won the opening roll far more often than it should, In a 100 game set the computer won the opening roll 83 times. Improbable but not impossble if random dice were used. When it has one possible number to bring in a tile, it hits that number about 90 percent of the time. And if there is a roll that will turn the game around, like only a 5 will bring in the tile and the other die rolling a 4 will take an opponent out... well, well, it hits that almost every time. The fact that ALL of these improbable events favor the AI leads to the conclusion that yes, the dice are rigged. If you need to bring a man in, somehow it takes far more rolls than statistically necessary to roll an open number - game after game after game. I have played this game hundreds of times and marked down the numbers of suspicious events like the aforementioned, and the result is that the computer is favored when supposedly random improbable events happen by over 5 to 1. The game is smooth, good graphics, but the supposed randomness of the dice is an absolute joke. I gave it 5 stars just so MAYBE the developer will let it show up in the review list.

Ive Played EXPERT level for years

I will tell anyone that this both the best and worst backgammon game ever. It teaches you to be a great player. Then when youre good, and play the expert level, it flagrantly cheats over and over. Anyone who says otherwise is DELUSIONAL. The computers quality of rolls at that level is unparalleled. How often have I had 3 of the computers pieces on the bar with one space open and it gets the perfect doubles, brings in 3 pieces AND hits me. IT CHEATS ON EXPERT. There is literally no debate on this topic. Ive played this specific game for many many years. It also prevents you from getting what you need. You need a 4, 5 or 6,and it can take you easily 6 or 7 or more rolls. The computer at that level might need a 6, and is guaranteed to get it in a maximum of 2 rolls and usually 1. Ive seen it take 3 but never ever more. When it cant beat you with skill, it wins purely on rolls. If you disagree Im laughing at you. Ive played expert literally for years. I will crush any human on a real board. I only lose to the game when Im up a ton. Then the dice kill me.

Years Later, Still The Best!

Technically it is not the same game because it is upgraded periodically. Of all the backgammon games I have available to me, this is always the one I love spending time with.

This game has the advantage

Doesnt matter what the developer claims. The game has the advantage in expert mode. I am a master player and this is definitely rigged.

Best BG program

At expert, this is tough to beat. It does make a few minor errors in bear off. Also, input your own dice rolls, especially if it makes an insane take. Otherwise get ready for a series of doubles in the bear off.

Fix Is In

Another Backgammon game in expert mode that manages to get the perfect rolls and big doubles just when they are needed. Over and over and over again. When will someone code one of these with pure random rolls at some level with the computer?

Great game

Compared to most of the Backgammon games for the iPad , this one comes out on top. Smooth running and very enjoyable to play. Play with partners or against computer , I have had no problems at all with software crashes or hanging up forever.

Interesting experience . . . . .

This is a very nice looking game. But I cant say that Ive learned anything about the game. Well, thats not quite true. Ive learned that at the expert level, when the computer doubles, no matter how slight its advantage, Im usually dead. Im going to end up with men on the bar, and they will likely be there a very long time. I play safe, I play aggressively -- it matters not. For anyone who wants to learn the game, I would recommend NOT playing the computer at the expert level. Its like playing the luckiest person in the world, and youre likely to learn a bunch of bad habits -- like being overly cautious. That said, I think the game is most enjoyable when used for online play.

Game AI has been modified

Please restore the original game AI as it used to be. A few versions ago the game AI has been modified. It used to provide a fairly balanced experience. The AI on the easy level was truly easy and on the expert level it was truly expert. The levels in-between reflected a balanced game. Now, on the easy level, the computer regularly throws 5-8 doubles on a regular basis, while Im lucky if I get a single one. You really cant call this an easy level, especially if the gameplay is similar on higher levels. I have no understanding why the AI had to be modified to provide a truly unfair experience. PS: the computer just threw eight (!!!) doubles on the easy level. Just give me a break, will you!
